Callout Area

Mayo Mountain Rescue Teams main base of activity and by far the most common call out location is Croagh Patrick, otherwise known as "The Reek" overlooking Clew Bay outside Westport. Murrisk is the nearest village and starting point for the most common ascent (North side) of the mountain along a pilgrim path over 1500 years in existence. However many pilgrims also approach the mountain from other routes;

1. From the south east along the old Pilgrim Path (Toghar Padraig) from Roscommon and Ballintubber Abbey through Aughagower.

2. From the MMRT base at Taoibhnacroibhe at the south of the mountain

3. From the Lecanvy side to the West via the third station (traditional pilgrim point of worship) encountering an old controversial Gold prospecting path from the 1980's along part of the route

The pilgrim tradition, fame and ease of access of Croagh Patrick makes it by far Ireland's most climbed mountain and it is therefore understandable that the vast majority of MMRT's rescues and searches are carried out on and surrounding its slopes, however MMRT are available for callouts all over Mayo and into the bordering counties if requested. MMRT have carried out search and Rescue on

Nephin,
Mweelrea,
The Nephin Beg Range
and Achill Island

and assisted Galway with searches in The Twelve Pins. They have also assisted Kerry Mountain Rescue in searches in the Magillacuddy Reeks.
